The library is command central for doing online research, finding a good book or accessing quick links that help to keep you well informed. The Library is open 7:30 to 3:30 Tuesday through Friday and from 7:30 to 2:15 on Monday.

Library Databases

Passwords for all electronic products can be found on the DSHS Library Aspen page. Passwords have been moved to Aspen to provide a location for purchased products that require secure access. It's very simple to find the passwords.  Log in to Aspen, click on Page Directory, click on DSHS Library -- You're there!  Let me know if you have questions or need help.

InfoTrac Gale

InfoTrac is a collection of databases, with both general and specific content, covering a wide range of topics useful for research.  It is provided by the Massachusetts Library System and is available within Massachusetts from any device with internet access.  A valid library card from any Massachusetts public library is needed to access the databases from outside the state, but otherwise should not be necessary.  InfoTrac databases cover a wide variety of topics from all content areas.  Here are just a few:

  • General OneFile - A one-stop source for news and periodical articles on a wide range of topics.

  • Academic OneFile - The premier source for peer-reviewed, full-text articles from the world's leading journals/reference sources.

  • Health Reference Center Academic - Access to full text nursing and allied health journals, plus a variety of personal health info.

  • Gale Virtual Reference Library - A database of encyclopedias and specialized reference sources for multidisciplinary research.

  • Educator's Reference Complete - Full text academic journals, reports and premier reference sources.

  • Student Edition - Periodical database of full-text magazines, newspapers and podcasts on current issues.

  • The New York Times - Full text starting in 1985.

  • Expanded Academic - General reference database.

  • Biography in Context - Biographical info. for people both current and historic from all eras and fields of endeavor.

Gale Student Resources In Context 
A fully integrated database containing thousands of curriculum-targeted primary documents, biographies, topical essays, background information, critical analyses, full-text coverage of over 650 magazines, newspapers, over 20,000 photographs and illustrations, and more than 8 hours of audio and video clips. Now includes American Decades.

Historic New York Times (1851 - 2009)

Includes full-text and full-image articles for dates listed above.  More recent years are available through InfoTrac Gale the link for which is at the top of this page.  DSHS no longer provides this database.  It's available through the Boston Public Library.  Sign up for their eCard.  It's easy to do and provides access to Historic NY Times and many other valuable resources. 

World History: The Modern Era from ABC-CLIO

From 1500 to the present day this database is a library of historical reference materials and interactive curricular units.

World at War: Conflict and Society from ABC-CLIO

Presents comprehensive information and unique insights into military conflicts that have defined our world from antiquity to today.

Smithsonian Primary Sources in US History

Gale and Smithsonian have partnered to deliver an online resource of unique and seminal primary sources, including documents, maps, historical objects, and other materials from the Smithsonian Museum and its archives as well as Gale's digital collections.

Bloom's Literature

Bloom’s Literature offers a comprehensive resource for the study of literature. This database includes thousands of critical essays, author biographies and character analyses, the full text of hundreds of books from our extensive reference collection, and a Shakespeare Center housing in one convenient location the database’s treasure trove of content on all things Shakespeare.
