METCO Program

METCO, Incorporated is a private nonprofit organization founded in 1966.  Currently the program
places 3,100 minority students. (African-American, Asian and Hispanic) from Boston communities in
suburban school systems.  METCO is the nation’s second oldest voluntary inter-district school
desegregation program funded by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts under the Racial Imbalance
Act.

THE MISSION

Our  mission is to ensure access to quality suburban public school education for  students of color from
urban school districts and to enhance the educational experience of suburban students by providing an
integrated learning environment.

THE PURPOSES

a.  To provide the opportunity for an integrated public school education for  children of color from 
racially-imbalanced schools in Boston by placing them in suburban schools.

b.  To provide a new learning experience for suburban children.

c.  To provide closer understanding and cooperation between urban and suburban parents and other
citizens in the Metropolitan Boston area.

The Dover Sherborn METCO program is funded for a total of 40 students.  We presently have students
enrolled at the Pine Hill, Chickering, Dover Sherborn Middle and Dover Sherborn High schools.
