HAVING TROUBLE FINDING
A GOOD BOOK?

Ask your friends!
Ask Ms. Woodward - she loves to recommend good books to students!

Book Clubs
Joining a book club means that you will get to read  books you might not have found on your own. See Ms. W. about joining one of the school book clubs!

Authors
When you find an author you like, try to read more of his/her titles.

Cover
People often choose a book just on how the cover looks. Don't reject a book just because you don't like the cover!
1. Read all the inside flaps and the back of the dust jacket.
2. Read about the author.
3. Did this book receive any awards?
4. When was this book published?

Read
Read the first couple of pages. Try a page in the middle of the book. Do you find yourself wanting to read more? Use the five finger rule: if there are more than five words on a page that you don't understand, you might be frustrated with a too difficult book. On the other hand, don’t be afraid if there are a few words you don’t understand.  Look them up, or try to guess their meaning from the context (from the rest of the sentence).

Keep Looking
Don’t give up if you don't find your good book right away.  Good readers keep looking until they find one that they really want to read. If a good reader doesn't like the book after the first few chapters, he or she is not afraid to return the book and try another one. Life is too short to spend it reading a book you don't enjoy!
