Junior Parent Timeline

 

PARENT TIMELINE FOR COLLEGE ADMISSIONS               
CLASS OF 2013
                                                                                                           
SPRING OF JUNIOR YEAR:
·         Conduct Intensive Research on Colleges and Universities
·         Visit Colleges (ideal times are February and April vacations)
·         Begin Interviews where appropriate
·         Take Spring SAT (March or May)
·         Take Spring ACT (April or June)
·         Take CollegeBoard’s Subject Tests in June as appropriate after discussion with subject teacher
·         Remind student in May to speak with one-to-two teachers before summer vacation about writing possible recommendations for college
 
SUMMER INTO SENIOR YEAR:
·         Visit colleges and schedule appropriate interviews
·         Complete the Common Application
·         Rough draft essay ideas
·         Complete an activities resume
 
FALL OF SENIOR YEAR:
·         Register for October, November and/or December SAT's, Subject Tests (consult counselor), and ACT
·         Visit colleges and schedule appropriate interviews
·         WATCH DEADLINES: Students must allow a minimum of three weeks for requesting Guidance materials tobe processed and submitted to colleges
·         All application material requests with a January 1, 2013  deadline must be submitted in Naviance  no later thanFriday, December 7, 2012 to guarantee submission/mailing before winter vacation
·         Students applying EARLY must notify counselor of their intentions, complete their information as requested in NAVIANCE, and submit the $5.00 processing fee  BY FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2012 to guarantee meeting early deadlines.
·         Initial senior appointments will be scheduled with counselor no later than Friday, November 2, 2012
·         Determine Financial Aid requirements at each college and register on-line (www.collegeboard.org) for the  “CSS PROFILE" if colleges to which student is applying require this form   
·         If applying for financial aid, apply for and obtain FAFSA pin numbers for both student and parents in early fall @ www.fafsa.ed.gov
·         Check with each college BEFORE the DEADLINE for that college to insure that application is complete/all materials have been received
 
WINTER OF SENIOR YEAR:
·         Mail or submit electronic FAFSA not before but soon after January 1, 2013 - remember financial aid is first come-first served.
·        Update colleges if appropriate
 
SPRING OF SENIOR YEAR:
·        Visit colleges BEFORE making final decisions
·        Notify Guidance Office of application decisions
·        Notify all colleges of decisions to attend or not to attend before May 1st
·        Take June Subject Tests if requested by college for placement purposes
