English Language Learners (ELL)

Any student who speaks a language other than English may request an English Language Proficiency exam.   The exam defines a child's ability with English conversation, vocabulary, reading, and writing.

Who qualifies for English Language Education (ELE)?

Upon entering any of the Dover Sherborn Public Schools, parents/guardians are asked to complete a Home Language Survey on which they disclose information regarding the language spoken in one's home.

What is ELE?
Students with demonstrated ELE needs work in small groups with an instructor, preview and review material studied in the general education classroom, and receive individualized support based on his/her unique needs.

ELE services are provided by a Massachusetts licensed teacher with specialization in English as a Second Language.  ELE teachers use research-based techniques to help students acquire English so that they may fully participate in their schools and community.

Students' eligibility for sheltered English instruction and progress towards English acquisition (if applicable) is carefully monitored by credentialed instructors who provide regular communication with parent(s)/guardian(s) through a series of communications including:

Testing and Accountability

Federal and state laws require that limited English proficient (LEP) students be assessed annually to measure their proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, English, as well as the progress they are making in learning English. In keeping with these laws, LEP students must participate in the Massachusetts English Proficiency Assessment (MEPA), consisting of two assessments:

Massachusetts English Proficiency Assessment-R/W (MEPA-R/W)
The MEPA-R/W assesses LEP students' proficiency in reading and writing.

Fall = Only those LEP students enrolled in grades 1-12 who did not participate in MEPA-R/W testing the prior spring, including students new to MA and students who were absent or took only part of the MEPA the prior spring.

Spring = All LEP students enrolled in grades K–12 and all FLEP students enrolled in grades K–12 who were reported as LEP in the prior October SIMS submission.

Massachusetts English Language Assessment-Oral (MELA-O)
The MELA-O assesses LEP students' proficiency in listening (comprehension) and speaking (production) at grades K-12.

Fall = Only those LEP students enrolled in grades 1-12 who did not participate in MELA-O test administration the prior spring, including students new to MA and students who were absent or took only part of the MEPA the prior spring.

Spring = All LEP students enrolled in grades K–12 and all formerly LEP (FLEP) students enrolled in grades K–12 who were reported as LEP in the prior October SIMS submission.

Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS)
All LEP students in grades 3-12 are also required to participate in the MCAS annually.
