Dover-Sherborn High School music students will be embarking on a cultural immersion trip to New York this spring. As a fundraiser to help defray costs for this trip, Olivia Cutler, current HS band member and former Pine Hill and DSMS student has made a beautiful music themed quilt, which is being raffled off in early February at a FOPA fundraiser.  Raffle tickets can be purchased from participating HS music students as well as at the DSMS Chocolate Cafe, the FOPA fundraiser and through the mail.

To the Families of Dover and Sherborn
For almost 25 years, Dover and Sherborn families have hosted students from around the world through the AFS (American Field Service) program.  Our students' lives have been enriched by students from many different countries:  Thailand, China, Latvia, Italy, Argentina, Germany, and Belgium to name a few.

This year, DSHS has two AFS students:  Yuka Tojo, from Japan, is staying with Emily Scanlon (DSMS) and her mother, Rose DiBartolo, and Naomi Fuhri, from Austria, is staying with Rachael and Michelle Bornstein (DSMS and DSHS) and their parents, Wendy and Bruce.  We can't thank these families enough for opening their homes to these students who have enriched our children's lives.

The AFS program is currently seeking host families for the 2009 - 2010 Academic Year.  Students are being accepted now and host family matches have started.  We would love to have a DS family host an international student for next year.  (You might also consider hosting a student for a semester.)

As a host family, you will see a thorough application from prospective AFS students prior to being matched.  As a potential hosting family, DS families will also need to fill out an application.  I have a file of available student profiles for review.

If you are interested in learning more about hosting and would like to speak to a DS parent, please feel free to contact one of our recent host parents:  Rose DiBartolo, 785-3434, rosedib@comcast.net or Wendy Bornstein, 785-1133, wbornstein@mindspring.com.  Or please contact any member of the parent board listed below.

You can also call 1-800-AFS-Info, email afsinfo@afs.org or visit http://www.usa.afs.org/usa_en/focus_on/hosting

The Dover Sherborn International Students Parent Support Group has enjoyed working with and supporting these students, their host families and the DSHS AFS club this year.  We are always looking for interested parents to join our board!  Please contact any of us if you would like to find out more about what we do.

Sincerely,

The Dover Sherborn International Students Parent Support Group

Recycling for the environment and the PTO!
Everyone knows recycling is good for the environment, but did you know that recycling is also good for the DSHS PTO?  The PTO has just partnered with Plant Green, a cartridge remanufacturing company, to start an exciting new fundraiser that recycles mobile phones and used printer cartridges - and we want you to be a part of it!

If you use a printer, each spent cartridge could earn the PTO over a dollar.  Any old cell phones in your drawer? Those can make up to $15.  One phone may not seem like much, but if you get your family and friends involved - recycling is a great way for everyone to go green, while raising money for a cause!

Taking part is easy - simply send inkjet cartridges and cell phones with your student and drop them in the collection boxes in the front office.  Please put spent cartridges in plastic bags.  (Laser cartridges will not be accepted.)  Old cell phones, chargers, PDAS, and pagers may be turned in.

Your participation in this recycling campaign will raise funds for our organization.  The PTO sponsors teacher appreciation luncheons, coordinates De-Stress DS activities such as our recent Bagel/Muffin extended break, sponsors lectures series and organizes the post-Graduation reception.  Let's work together, one cartridge and cell phone at a time, to clean up the planet and raise money for a worthwhile cause!

Thank you for your continued support.

US News and World Report named Dover-Sherborn High School a Gold Medal School, ranking us 65th in the nation.  For additional details, please access the following web site:

      http://www.usnews.com/articles/education/high-schools/2007/11/29/gold-medal-schools.html

Boston Magazine  released a list of the area's 50 best public high schools. Their goal was not to identify only those schools that are performing well, but also those doing so while operating efficiently, too. Dover Sherborn High School ranked 3rd in Cost Efficiency and 7th in Academic Performance.

New Computer Blues
The good news is that you have a new computer. The bad news is that you can’t open your files on the school computers that you created on your new home computer. The most likely reason for this is that your new computer runs Office 2007 while the DS network runs Office 2002. Unfortunately, the files created using Office 2007 cannot be opened with Office 2002.
Don’t despair, there is a solution to this problem. It’s possible to save files in Office 2007 programs in the ‘old’ Office file formats. For example, for a word document, on the new computer, just select Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc) from the Save As Type drop-down list in the Save As dialog box.

Food & Nutrition News
Starting in September 2007, students will no longer be allowed to charge on their accounts. Prepayments should be in place at the beginning of the school year so that your child will be able to use his/her lunch account. We strongly suggest that you open your child’s account with $100.00.
