Introduction to Computer Applications

This semester-long course is designed to develop a student's understanding of the major uses of the computer in our society.  Students will build upon the skills they learned in Middle School in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.  They will also learn how to develop a simple database in Microsoft Access and how to develop and maintain a simple web site using Microsoft FrontPage. 

Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Use advanced features in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Create a simple database using Microsoft Access
  • Create a simple web site using Microsoft FrontPage
  • Conduct effective Internet research

Topics To Be Covered - Microsoft Excel

  • Students will be able to identify the features of a spreadsheet such as: cell, row, column, sheet, workbook, address
  • Students will be able to identify the uses of Excel: A graphic organizer, address list, tracking information, performing multiple calculations
  • Students will be able to use Excel to perform basic calculations either by entering their own functions or using the preprogrammed functions and will learn how to use relative and absolute reference to create spreadsheets that calculate many cells.
  • Students will be able to identify and use the basic formatting functions: borders, cell sizing, auto-sizing cells, centering across cells, formatting cell contents, inserting and removing cells, rows and columns
  • Students will be familiar with the concepts of data collection and sampling and will be able to take a simple collection of raw data, tabulate it and create a simple chart from that information.
  • Students will be able to plan a large spreadsheet.
  • Students will be able to add headers and footers to a spreadsheet
  • Students will be able to enter functions using the function command
  • Students will be able to change the margins, print orientation, and page break of a spreadsheet
  • Students will be able to Use the IF function and use text in the IF function
  • Students will be able to use and print multiple sheets
  • Students will be able to copy and move data between sheets
  • Students will be able to refer to data in different sheets
  • Students will be able to create pie, bar, and line charts of spreadsheet data.
  • Students will be able to modify, format, and print charts.
  • Students will be able to answer What If? Questions using a spreadsheet
  • Students will be able to sort the data in a spreadsheet
  • Students will be able to use the CHOOSE and VLOOKUP functions
  • Students will be able to freeze selected rows and columns
  • Students will be able to create an amortization table using the PMT function
  • Students will be able to print a selected spreadsheet area
  • Students will be able to create hyperlinks to the Internet
  • Students will be able to copy data between spreadsheets
  • Students will be able to create embedded and linked objects in spreadsheets

Integrating Technology Project

Students will be able to integrate  the skills learned throughout the semester into a final course project.
