 SCENARIO

The Canadian Tourist Bureau is looking for new promotional materials. These materials should hi-light how the climate, physical geography, and natural resources have influenced the settlement, trade and economy of the Provinces and Territories; promoting the reasons to visit Canada.

How do climate, physical geography and natural resources affect the people of Canada?

TASK AND PROCESS

 

With a partner, plan and create a brochure or a radio or television ad for one of the Provinces or Territories of Canada to be used by the Canadian Tourist Bureau to attract tourists.

Choose one of these Provinces or Territories:

  • Alberta
  • British Columbia
  • Manitoba
  • New Brunswick
  • Newfoundland
  • Northwest Territories
  • Nova Scotia
  • Nunavut
  • Ontario
  • Prince Edward Island
  • Quebec
  • Saskatchewan
  • Yukon Territory

 Your promotional project should include information about the climate, physical geography, and natural resources. Explain how these have influenced the settlement, trade and economy of the province / territory.

Your promotional project will be scored using the following rubrics:

QUESTIONS


Essential Question:

HoHow do climate, physical geography and natural resources affect the people of Canada?

Subsidiary questions:

  • What is the climate? Look at:
    Distance from large bodies of water
    Elevation
    Precipitation
    Ranges in temperature
  • What are the physical geographic landforms in the province / territory?
  • What are the natural resources in your province / territory?
  • How are the natural resources linked to the physical geography?
  • What are the major cities?
  • What are the languages spoken?
  • Which cultures are represented in this province / territory?
  • What kinds of jobs do people have?
  • How do people travel about the province / territory?
  • How does climate affect the goods and services produced?

GATHER AND SORT


Gather
information about your province / territory from a variety of sources. Be sure to document the source of your information.

ORGANIZE


Analyze your completed inquiry organizer. Do you have enough information about your province / territory to answer the essential question?

Synthesize: Use your information to create your promotional material.

Here are directions for creating your brochure.  Remember, the purpose is to excite people to come and visit your province/territory.  Here is a template to help get you started.

Here are directions for creating your television commercial.  Remember that you are trying to encourage people to visit your province/territory.  Here is a template for the storyboard you will need to create your video.

Evaluate: Review the checklist for your brochure, checklist for your radio ad, or checklist for your television commercial to make sure you have included all the information required. If you have not answered all the questions, go back and use the resources to find the missing information.

CONCLUSION

Couch Potato Review: Participate in a peer review of your classmates Canadian Tourist Ads. Use this chart to take notes.

Reflection: Now you know something about Canada's provinces / territories and their physical characteristics and human-made features. Write a journal article telling which region you would like to visit and why. Refer to your writing rubric for guidance.
